  1. How to create a household budget

Comments Off on How to create a household budget

Most of us have financial goals – to get out of debt, buy a house, send a child to college, plan for retirement. These goals often evolve over time, depending on your personal circumstances. But one of the best steps you can take toward any financial goal is to develop a monthly budget and stick to it.

    In addition, a budget will:

    • Help you ensure basic needs are covered
    • Lower stress
    • Enable good decisions when you know you can afford something
    • Help you continue to define your personal financial goals as they evolve over time

    Getting started

Creating a monthly budget can seem like a daunting task. But our downloadable Excel spreadsheet will make things simpler.

    Downloadable budget spreadsheet

    Income

Start by figuring out your average monthly household take-home income — salaries and any other income that your family might have.

    Regular expenses

Some expenses are predictable and don’t vary much from month to month, and they tend to be due in the same order. These can include:

    • Housing costs: mortgage(s) or rent, utilities, cable, water/sewer, taxes
    • Transportation: car payment(s), insurance
    • Insurance: home, health, life
    • Expenses related to children: tuition, child care, etc.
    • Cell phone
    • Other regular monthly expenses: subscriptions to streaming music or video services, health club fees
    • Loans: personal loans, student loans, etc.
    • Taxes
    • Regular investments: retirement, investment, college funds

    Expenses that aren’t fixed

Other expenses might be more difficult to estimate, but you can start to get an idea by looking through electronic bank records or credit card statements, and by saving receipts. How much do you typically spend on these items?

    • Groceries
    • Medical bills
    • Credit card bills
    • Entertainment: event tickets, vacations
    • Dining out (including lunches, dinners, coffees or snacks). Many people find they spend much more on this category than they’d realized.
    • Personal care: haircuts, nail care, etc.
    • Gas and vehicle maintenance
    • Charitable gifts

    Budgeting is an ongoing process

As you continue to work with your budget, you’ll start to get a better big-picture sense of your finances – the more accurate your tracking, the better the benefit. We recommend revisiting your budget once a month, if not more often. Over time, you’ll get a better sense of these questions:

    • What things vary, and to what degree can you control the degree of variation?
    • Is credit card debt a significant problem, and would it make sense to consider a consolidation loan?
    • What are common surprises/irregular expenses?
    • Where can costs be reduced?
    • Can you put more money into savings?

    Conclusion

Budgeting has the added benefit of helping you look at life from a perspective of abundance, rather than scarcity. Being in full control of your money helps you move toward financial goals, and feel good about it. Why not get started today?

  2. Now hiring full-time tellers

Comments Off on Now hiring full-time tellers

Slovenian Savings & Loan is looking for full-time tellers! Please inquire at any branch, or send your resume to our Conemaugh office at 361 First Street, Conemaugh, PA 15909.

  3. Beware of scams involving cash apps!

Comments Off on Beware of scams involving cash apps!

Slovenian has seen an alarming increase in scams involving cash apps like Venmo, Cash App, and Zelle that allow you to send or receive payment through your smartphone. These cash apps link to your bank account and can be used to pay for things in stores, to pay other people, or even to take payments from others.

The apps themselves are safe to use — especially if you turn on two-factor identification — and many people find them convenient. However, they represent a new technology for scammers to try and get people to send them money using age-old tactics. Be on the lookout for text messages or emails that claim things like:

    • You’ve won a prize or sweepstakes and need to deposit money to collect
    • A loved one is sick, in trouble, or stranded and needs money immediately
    • The IRS wants to collect tax money immediately, or something dire will happen
    • Your computer is about to fail, but if you send money a technician will fix it
    • You should use your cash app to reload a gift card for a large reward

Almost always, these messages sound urgent, and like something terrible will happen if you don’t respond immediately. Log into the app and see if anyone is requesting you send them money — if not, it is almost certainly a scam. And as always, NEVER give out your user ID or password.

If you have any questions or think you’ve been the victim of a scam, contact your local Slovenian Savings & Loan branch.

  4. Welcome back to our lobbies June 5 — please wear a mask!

Comments Off on Welcome back to our lobbies June 5 — please wear a mask!

Gov. Wolf has moved Cambria and Somerset Counties to the “green” phase of reopening in the COVID crisis, and we are delighted to re-open our lobbies for regular business once more on Friday, June 5. We take the health and safety of our customers and employees very seriously, and are taking the following steps:

    • Customers and employees are required to wear masks at all times in accordance with CDC recommendations. Customers without masks will be offered one. If you would prefer not to wear a mask, we encourage you to use our drive-thru window instead.
    • Social distancing will be promoted in the lobby. Floor decals will help customers stand 6′ apart, and plexiglass shields at the teller windows will protect customers and employees. Hand sanitizer will be available for customer use.

We are grateful for your patience and cooperation, and look forward to welcoming you back to our branch locations.

  5. Beware of coronavirus unemployment scams!

Comments Off on Beware of coronavirus unemployment scams!

Slovenian Savings & Loan has learned of unemployment scams related to the coronavirus crisis. Notably, scammers are obtaining personal information and using this information to file for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits, routing the payments into their own bank accounts. As always, we encourage you to be very careful with all personal information, especially your Social Security number.

    Other specific tips:

    • If you receive benefits you did not file for, do not use them — they must be returned.
    • If you file a claim, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) may need to call you. Recognize these phone numbers as legitimate: 888-313-7284 – regular UC; 855-284-8545 – Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA)
    • Never give your personal information to third parties that claim to be able to help you with your UC benefits.

Much more about common scams and how to avoid them can be found on the PA Office of Unemployment Compensation’s website, here.

  6. Slovenian continues with drive-up service as our region moves to ‘yellow’

Comments Off on Slovenian continues with drive-up service as our region moves to ‘yellow’

While our entire service area is now in Pennsylvania’s “yellow” phase of reopening, Slovenian Savings & Loan has made the decision to continue operating drive-thru and by appointment only. Our focus continues to be the safety and well-being of our employees and customers.

We continue to offer 24-hour banking options such as iTalk phone banking and NetTeller Internet banking, including Remote Deposit for your convenience.

As a reminder, our offices are keeping the same drive-thru hours, but will also allow customers access to their safe deposit boxes by appointment during normal banking hours. We are also checking night depository boxes throughout the day during normal operating hours.

Please note our ATM machines are available at all branches. Due to the lack of drive-thru facilities, the Conemaugh office (814) 535-7658 is night deposit and lobby-by-appointment only.

Branches with drive-thru facilities are as follows:

    • Moxham Office – 512 Central Avenue, Johnstown, PA 15902
      814-539-8091
    • Richland Office – 95 Hostetler Road, Johnstown, PA 15904

  7. SS&L to remain open

Comments Off on SS&L to remain open

As a bank, Slovenian Savings & Loan is considered an essential business and will continue to be open. We take seriously the health and well-being of our employees and the greater community and will take additional actions, if needed. It would be to your advantage to ask your local branch about our free online/mobile and phone banking services.

We also want to make you aware that scams related to the coronavirus crisis are beginning to appear — be on the lookout for suspicious emails or text messages, fraudulent donation sites impersonating a company, charity, or even a government agency. Again, if you have any questions please contact your local Slovenian Savings & Loan branch.

  9. Slovenian Spotlight: Sabrina Fuller

Comments Off on Slovenian Spotlight: Sabrina Fuller

Sabrina Fuller’s favorite word is “delightful,” and that’s a good way to describe her! She’s been a teller at the Moxham branch of Slovenian Savings & Loan for five years, and is also the bank’s point of contact for issues involving credit card fraud.

Born in Johnstown, Sabrina lived here until she was 12, when her family moved to Rogersville, Tennessee, a small town north of Knoxville. She completed high school there, and earned an associates’ degree from Tennessee Tech in 2004. She began her career working in cash management for a retail chain in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she gained experience working to prevent and detect fraud.

About five years ago, Sabrina returned to Johnstown to be closer to family, and began working at Slovenian almost immediately. “Johnstown is a great community, and it just seems like people are more considerate of each other,” she explains. “And it’s like that here at Slovenian, too. This is a very family-oriented place, and we all work together really well.”

She says those values are part of Slovenian’s service to customers, too. “At Slovenian, you’re a person, not an account number. We’re a smaller bank and we pride ourselves on getting to know you.”

  10. Slovenian sponsors Hollywood Nights: The Music of Bob Seger, coming to the Arcadia on 9/28

Slovenian Savings & Loan is proud to once again sponsor a show at Windber’s historic Arcadia Theater, coming up on Sat., Sept. 28!

Hollywood Nights is the ultimate tribute to Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. This 10-piece New Jersey-based powerhouse has set out to re-create everything about Bob and his music right down to the smallest detail — even a baby grand piano. The band prides itself on continuing the amazing groundwork laid down by Bob over the past 30 years. They share the belief of Bob and his fans: Represent the voice of every fan, his or her values, working-class background, and the love of rock ‘n’ roll. If you are a true Bob Seger fan, you won’t want to miss Hollywood Nights!

The band will play many of Bob Seger’s greatest hits, which include “Against the Wind,” “That Old Time Rock’n’Roll,” “Turn the Page,” and “Hollywood Nights.” A visit to the beautiful Arcadia is always a treat — we hope to see you there!
