  1. Slovenian sponsors The Everly Brothers Experience at the Arcadia Theater

Comments Off on Slovenian sponsors The Everly Brothers Experience at the Arcadia Theater

Slovenian Savings & Loan is proud to sponsor the Arcadia Theater’s August 25 production of The Everly Brothers Experience! The Arcadia Theater, which was built in 1921, is a gem of the Windber community, and presents quality touring entertainment as well as children’s shows. If you haven’t been to the theater recently, this is a great time to go!

The Everly Brothers Experience features a five-piece band led by Dylan and Zach Smed, talented musicians who grew up in a show biz household – their father, Adrian, is a singer/actor/dancer. The Zmeds have immersed themselves in the classic folk rock music of the Everly Brothers to give as authentic an experience as possible, while putting their own mark on the show. They explain, “We are not impersonators – our aim is to honor the aesthetics of the Everlys’ iconic sound and their unique place in music history, all while telling our own personal story.”

The Everly Brothers sold more than 35 million records from 1957 to 1962. They still hold the record for most Billboard-charting hits of any American duo (100 singles, 26 of which were in the top 40). In their day, they were second in popularity only to Elvis – and this engaging, exciting show is sure to delight old and new Everly fans alike.

“People like this era of music, and we’re looking forward to presenting this show for the first time at our theater,” said Gerald Ledney, the Arcadia’s executive director.

The Everly Brothers Experience has been presented to enthusiastic crowds all over the world in clubs, theaters, performing arts centers, casinos, ballrooms, and coliseums. Slovenian Savings & Loan is delighted to help support its presentation at the historic Arcadia Theater.

  2. Slovenian Spotlight: Barb Verno

Comments Off on Slovenian Spotlight: Barb Verno

Born and raised in Franklin Boro, Barb Verno loves working just five minutes away as a teller in the Conemaugh branch of Slovenian Savings & Loan. She began working for Slovenian in 1987, just a few years after graduating from Conemaugh Valley High School.

“Working at Slovenian Savings & Loan felt comfortable from the very beginning, as I knew customers already from my time at school, and from my family,” Barb says. “Now, 31 years later, I’m seeing a whole new generation coming through our doors – the children of those original customers, who I first met when their parents brought them in as newborns. It’s wonderful.”

Barb and her husband, Joe, have also raised a family here. The couple’s two children, Jessica (25) and Anthony (23), will both be graduating from college this year. The Vernos will celebrate their 30th anniversary in October.

Banking procedures and technology were very different in 1987, of course. Barb remembers big changes in the computerized systems, ATMs, and debit cards, but she also remembers the evolution of Slovenian itself.

“When I started, the Moxham branch had just opened,” she notes. “We’ve opened three additional branches since then, and added so many products and services.”

Barb values the warm work atmosphere of the bank, and that all the employees know each other so well – as well as their families. That warmth extends to the customers.

“A few years ago, a new customer came in and expressed surprise when we called him by name,” she explains. “But that’s really typical – I’d say we know 95% of our customers by name. At Slovenian, you’re a person, not just an account.”

  3. Consider a mortgage with Slovenian Savings & Loan!

Comments Off on Consider a mortgage with Slovenian Savings & Loan!

Mortgage loans are what launched Slovenian Savings & Loan more than 100 years ago, and they are still one of our most important products. We enjoy helping people achieve the dream of home ownership – especially first-time buyers! We pride ourselves on offering experienced, friendly customer service for people seeking a mortgage, and hope you’ll allow us to serve you.

Mortgage loans offered by Slovenian Savings & Loan

We offer mortgage loans for a variety of purposes:

    • Purchase: when you are purchasing a home, mobile home, or vacant land
    • Refinance: when you already own your home, but want to refinance your mortgage in order to take advantage of a lower interest rate, consolidate debt, or improve your home.
    • Construction: when you are building a home

    First-time homebuyer program

Buying your first home is a big decision and an important life step, and we want to help! Slovenian Savings & Loan is proud to offer a discounted interest rate of .25% to first-time home buyers.

    Types of mortgages

There are two main types of mortgages: fixed rate and adjustable rate. Here’s a quick rundown of the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Fixed rate mortgages: These are exactly what they sound like – mortgages in which the interest rate does not change over the term of the loan. Slovenian Savings & Loan offers fixed-rate mortgages from one to 30-year terms. Interest rates are lower for shorter-term loans and higher for longer-term loans.

Advantages of fixed-rate mortgages include the stability in a changing economy, as your payments won’t change. Another advantage is that fixed-rate mortgages are easy to understand. The disadvantage is that if interest rates drop, you have to go through the trouble and expense of refinancing your mortgage in order to get a lower rate.

Adjustable rate mortgages: With adjustable rate mortgages, the initial interest rate is typically lower than a fixed-rate mortgage. Although the initial rate will stay the same for an introductory period, it will likely increase afterward. The interest rate that you pay will be determined by an index, which is a broader measure of interest rates. Adjustable rate mortgages tend to adjust either every year or every three years for the life of the loan, depending on the type selected. There is a cap on how high the interest rate can adjust each time and over the life of the loan.

An advantage of adjustable rate mortgages is that if rates drop in the future, the interest rate on your loan could reduce on the adjustment anniversary. Conversely, the disadvantage is that rates and payments can rise significantly each adjustment period.

  5. Slovenian Spotlight: Lynn Yingling

Comments Off on Slovenian Spotlight: Lynn Yingling

Lynn Yingling always knew she wanted to work for Slovenian Savings & Loan as her lifelong career with job security and opportunity.

“Slovenian is first and foremost a community, hometown bank, and that was my goal – to get to be part of my community, and to work in this area,” she says.

As a high school student at Conemaugh Valley High School, Lynn found she enjoyed math and accounting the most. She and her husband, Bill, began dating as sophomores, and have been together ever since.

First hired by Slovenian in 1986, Lynn became head teller at the Conemaugh branch in 1993, a position she continues to hold.

Lynn notes that working for Slovenian is like being part of a family that includes not only the employees and management, but also the board of directors and customers.

“I enjoy the work I do. The days go by so fast — it’s such a pleasant atmosphere,” she says.

Together the staff has worked together through many changes in banking procedures, beginning in the late 80s when everything was on spreadsheets, ledger paper and passbooks, to the present time with computers, online banking, and direct deposit — as well as digital technologies like ATM machines, debit cards, debit alerts, and mobile, online and phone banking. Lynn finds it fun to learn new banking technologies as they’re developed and implemented, and sharing that knowledge with the customers.

“At Slovenian, we pride ourselves on good customer service. Working with our customers and showing them how new products and services can benefit them is my favorite part of my job,” she explains.

  8. Slovenian Spotlight: Gerald Pozun

Comments Off on Slovenian Spotlight: Gerald Pozun

Gerald “Jerry” Pozun has been the branch manager for Slovenian Savings & Loan’s West Hills branch for 12 years. He came to Slovenian with considerable career experience from a large commercial bank, as the opportunity to work for a more customer service-oriented bank was too good to pass up.

“I’ve always appreciated Slovenian Savings & Loan’s values – they are genuinely focused on customer service,” Pozun explains. “And it’s great to work in a bank that’s in my community. I live just a half-mile from this branch, and raised my three sons here.”

That’s typical of Slovenian employees, Pozun points out. “It’s important to Slovenian Savings & Loan that our employees live in the communities they serve, so that they have a genuine stake in the area.”

Pozun has been married to his wife, Ruth, for 31 years. His son and daughter-in-law Alexander and Melissa Pozun live in Westmont, where they are raising Pozun’s first grandchild, Hadley. His son Andrew and his wife Nicole live in Morgantown, WV, while son Adam lives in Pittsburgh.

As branch manager, Pozun is responsible for growing the branch, which includes increasing the number of deposit customers and loans, as well as daily operations at the bank.

The branch building itself is striking, with a high, vaulted ceiling, exposed wood and lots of natural light. It’s a not a big building, but provides a beautiful atmosphere for the six branch employees who work there.

“Slovenian Savings & Loan is truly ‘big enough to serve you, small enough to care,’” Pozun concludes. “It’s a privilege to be part of the organization.”
